The Passion Week 2007 Day 1

"Because the Lord needs it"

Scripture Reading:

Matt 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19 (view these passages online)

Luke (Lk 19:34) accounts how Jesus was able to ride into Jerusalem. Normally he walked, but this time was different because He was to ride in as the Messiah, fulfilling ancient prophesy (Zech 9:9). The disciples found a colt where the Lord told them they would and when asked why they were taking it they responded, "because the Lord needs it."

Am I willing to adjust my time because the Lord needs it? Am I willing to give my resources because the Lord needs it? What do I withhold from the Lord that He could use to ride into my city in His glory?

All of the Gospels describe Jesus' entry into Jerusalem with cries of "Hosanna!" Hosanna originally was a cry for "help us," "save us," but by the time it was used here it was a cry of adoration reserved only for a sovereign ruler. What better term could be used to herald Jesus into the city where He would ultimately die in a few days? He is the sovereign of all rulers and the only one who could help us or save us.

Prayer:

  1. Thank God that His Son was both the sovereign of all creation, the King of Kings, and also the only one who could save you.
  2. Confess to Him that He alone is King of all, including your heart.
  3. Listen to His Spirit as he shows you the things in your life that He would like to use to display His glory.
  4. Ask Him to help you give Him the areas of your life that He has just shown you.
  5. Thank Him for His love for you that never leaves you or forgets you.

Meditation:

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
